The Department of Metallurgical Engineering was founded in 1966 in order to instruct metallurgical engineers and to perform research works in all aspects of manufacturing and processing of metallic materials. In 2000, the department was renamed the Department of Materials Science and Engineering due to the extensive researches carried out on metallic as well as on non-metallic materials. In the same year, the department was assigned as the center of excellence in "New Processes on Production and Forming of Advanced Materials" by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Research. At present, 30 full-time teaching members including 12 full professors, 14 associate professors and 4 assistant professors are involved in teaching and research affairs and more that 30 administrators and supportive staffs are serving in 16 research laboratories.

The department of materials science and engineering offers both undergraduate and graduate programs. In undergraduate level, two different programs are offered consisting of industrial metallurgy and extractive metallurgy. For the graduate level a two-year course leading to M.Sc. in several fields including welding metallurgy, extractive metallurgy, metal forming and deformation, ceramics materials, materials selection and processing, corrosion and protection of materials and metal casting is available. PhD research programs are also available in powder metallurgy, polymer engineering in addition to the above-mentioned areas.

The laboratories in the department of materials science and engineering have been equipped to conduct scientific research activities as well as to perform industrial-oriented projects and experiments.
